UN General Secretary honours Airbus engagement in "The Green Wave"

The General Secretary of the United Nations (UN), Mr. Ban Ki-moon recognized and commended Airbus and the National Geographic Society on the launch of their partnership and their joined forces to support "The Green Wave" project, the UN's mission in fighting the loss of biological diversity.
On the 5th of June, World Environment Day, Airbus launched together with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the National Geographic Society a world-reaching biodiversity communication campaign, "See the Bigger Picture" (www.seethebiggerpicture.org). The campaign has the aim of supporting and spreading the messages of "The Green Wave," a multi year global programme, raising awareness on the importance of biodiversity among young people, families and educators worldwide. The campaign comes in the run up to the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010. Released and distributed through the different publications of National Geographic the campaign has a potential reach of 260 million people within over 190 countries.
"I commend Airbus and National Geographic for their support, and I encourage students, parents and teachers to ride The Green Wave and spread the word," Ban Ki-moon, UN General Secretary said in an official message.
As an industry leader and global player Airbus 'sees the bigger picture' and is fully committed to act and help to tackle the main environmental threats - also the ones that lie beyond the aviation industry. Biodiversity is a global concern that demands commitment from everyone - international companies, world organisations, and the global population as a whole.
Airbus seeks to ensure that air transport continues to be an eco-efficient means of transport, delivering value while minimizing its environmental impact. Airbus is the first aeronautics company in the world to have earned the ISO 14001 environmental certification for all production sites and products for the entire life cycle.

The Green Wave project is an ambitious outreach program established by the Convention on Biological Diversity, a United Nations treaty. It aims to raise awareness among young people - tomorrow's decision makers - of the importance of biodiversity. On May 22nd each year, schools across the world will each plant a local tree species at 10 a.m. local time - uniting to send a "green wave" from east to west around the planet. The "See the Bigger Picture" photography contest runs until the 8th of September 2009. Until then, each participant is allowed to upload one picture to the www.seethebiggerpicture.org homepage or send it via mail. The contest is open to children aged between 6-16 (in the USA and Canada 6-14). The photos have to be submitted by the parent or legal guardian of the entrant.
