Cessna Aircraft today announced that another 1,300 workers were losing their jobs, blaming the continued economic downturn. This round of layoffs comes in addition to the 6,900 already announced in May.
Cessna Chairman, President and CEO Jack Pelton warned employees a few weeks ago that more layoffs would be coming, and Jim Walters, Cessna senior vice president of human resources, Friday sent a note to employees saying, "We have further revised our business plan to meet the weaker demand of this business cycle. Production in 2009 will be lower than our previous forecasts and production in 2010 will be lower than 2009."
Cessna will issue 800 notices on June 19, and the remaining notices will be distributed by Aug. 14. In addition the Wichita, Kans., aircraft maker is adding three more weeks of furlough to the four-week furlough that had been planned to begin on Friday, June 19. The additional furlough is not expected to affect production workers.
"While we must remain focused on cost management, especially inventory reduction, we will continue to invest in our new products and services to maintain our industry leadership," Walters said.
